Spain: Streets on fire as protest against COVID-19 restrictions hits Barcelona

Hundreds protested in Barcelona on Monday against the implementation of the state of emergency and the curfew, the measures adopted as a way of dealing with the growing number of cases of COVID-19 in Catalonia and the rest of Spain.

Demonstrators marched chanting slogans and carrying banners. They then blocked the streets near the Catalan Parliament dragging and burning garbage containers.

They also confronted the police deployed at the site. The demonstration was called by the leftist party Candidatura de Unidad Popular (CUP) and some coronavirus-skeptic organisations. According to local reports, the CUP supporters withdrew before the confrontations began.

On Sunday, the government announced a new state of emergency for all of Spain to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Spain has registered 1,098,320 cases of the coronavirus and 35,031 deaths related to the disease, according to data from John Hopkins University.
